Make simple bird feeders with your kids using gelatin and birdseed—an easy outdoor activity for preschoolers, toddlers, and big kids too.

Looking for an easy kids activity that gets them outside and excited about nature? These DIY bird feeders are simple to make, budget-friendly, and perfect for any season.

Kids as young as 3 can help with almost every step (just have an adult handle the boiling water).

What you need:

  • 2 cups water
  • 2 envelopes unflavored gelatin
  • 4 cups birdseed (choose a mix suited for your area)
  • Parchment paper
  • Baking sheet
  • Cookie cutters
  • Toothpick or pencil (to make a hole)
  • String or twine

How to make DIY bird feeders with kids:

1. Mix the birdseed and gelatin
Bring the water to a boil (adult step). Stir in the gelatin until fully dissolved. Pour into a large bowl, add the birdseed, and mix until everything is evenly coated. If the mixture looks too wet, add a little more birdseed.

2. Shape your bird feeders
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and place your cookie cutters on top. Spoon the mixture into each cutter and press it down firmly so there are no air pockets—this helps the feeders hold together once they dry.

3. Make a hole for hanging
Use a toothpick or pencil to poke a hole near the top of each shape. Keep it about ½ inch from the edge so it doesn’t break when you hang it.

4. Let them set
Place the baking sheet in the refrigerator overnight until the bird feeders are fully set and firm.

5. Hang and enjoy
Gently remove the feeders from the cookie cutters, thread string through the hole, and tie. Hang them on a tree branch or bush and watch for visiting birds!

Tips for success:

  • Press the mixture firmly so feeders don’t crumble
  • Thicker cookie cutters work best
  • Hang in a spot where kids can easily watch from a window
  • Use seasonal shapes (hearts, stars, flowers) for extra fun

Why kids love this activity:

This is more than just a craft—it’s a hands-on way to learn about nature, birds, and caring for wildlife. Plus, it gives kids something to check on each day.

If you’re looking for easy outdoor activities for kids or simple nature crafts, this DIY bird feeder project is one you’ll come back to again and again.
