If you’ve ever seen those “perfect morning routine” videos where someone wakes up at 5am, meditates, drinks a green smoothie, journals, and somehow has a spotless kitchen before the kids wake up… yeah, that’s not my life. My house definitely doesn't look like something out of a Martha magazine. My mornings can be slow, but can also be hectic depending on how we slept. And they are fueled by coffee. Here's what a real weekday routine looks like in our house.
Somewhere between 6 - 7 am we wake up. It really depends on the day. But once my daughter is up (usually after a book or two or a little playtime in her room) we are up and at it for the day. Then it's time to get dressed, brush our teeth, and head downstairs ready for the day.
What's my first priority? Breakfast for my daughter, and coffee for me. I don't try anything productive until I have coffee in my system. While the coffee is brewing, I usually check my phone or computer quickly to see what emails or messages have come through that I need to tackle later, and check to see what substitute teacher jobs have opened up.
Breakfast for us is rarely fancy. It usually looks like nutritious fruit bars for her, or toast with butter, yogurt or cottage cheese and fruit. Later we usually have a second breakfast to tide us over until lunch.
After breakfast I'll take care of those emails, get some work in, or do a little pyrography work.
One of the beautiful things about parenting right now is that I am usually at home - so we don't need to worry about daycares. Since we aren't racing against a clock, we get to enjoy a slower morning. Every morning still looks a little different though, especially depending on what errands we need to run. It's better we get out before even getting close to nap time to avoid meltdown city. My version of a morning routine is functional, flexible, and built around my daughter, and that’s perfectly fine. If I get work done, playtime happens, and the house is maintained - it's a win for my family.
Hope you can relate to our realistic morning routine, too!
