Meet the Local Mompreneur behind Golden Light Doula

Women's History Month: Mompreneurs Interview

By Thyra Kelly March 10, 2026

To celebrate International Women's Day and Women's History Month, I have put together a selection of women who are both entrepreneurs and moms. Mompreneurs, if you will. These women have built businesses out of nothing that serve our local community. They're women who grew up in Sussex County and/or moved here to enjoy its scenic beauty. These businesses have all been built from scratch, with babies nursing, toddlers running around, and children playing. Nap times, the crayons on the wall and milk spilled on the floor can't stop the hustle of these mamas. Enjoy the first installation of my Women's History Month: Mompreneurs Interview, with Alyssa Vanderhoof.

What's your name?

Alyssa

What's your business name?

Golden Light Doula

What town in Sussex County do you live or operate?

I work in a 50 mile radius from 07832.

Tell us a little about yourself, and your story.

I'm a mom of 3 and grew up in Sussex County. I never realized how much I love the area until I moved to PA for a few years so I am glad I ventured back here. The scenery, animals, and community I love the most.

What inspired you to start your business or pursue what you do?

I started my business to be the help I wish I had. After each of my 3 kids were born, I was exhausted and had very little to zero help during the days. My husband helped the best he could when he was home, but those days were so lonely and overwhelming. Now I hope to be someone's anchor that they can lean on for support. Support looks different person to person, and day to day between physical, mental, and/or emotional influences, but I am happy to be there and support in any way that is needed.

What does your business do, and who do you help?

I help families with babies up to a year old learn how to navigate their new life. This can be educational information on what is normal, helping mom rest, baby care, helping with breastfeeding, formula feeding, and/or bottle feeding.

I also encapsulate placentas so mom can consume her placenta in pill form. This can provide mom with more energy, higher milk production, and overall improved mood.

How has becoming a mom influenced your work, business, or goals?

Becoming a mom is really what started all of this!

What challenges have you faced balancing motherhood and your work?

It is definitely hard to balance work life and home life. I make sure I'm not taking on too many clients so I am still a happy mom with my children. It is so easy to work yourself more than necessary. But when that means I'm not being the best mom, I choose to take a step back and see where I can fill up my own cup too -- even if its just a quick at home facial. I always enjoy a cup of tea!

What has been your proudest moment so far as a mom, entrepreneur, or both?

My proudest moment as a mom is probably seeing how my kids interact with each other. Don't get me wrong, they certainly fight... but they also are very sweet and love each other so much.

As an entrepreneur my proudest moment was studying while working full time, and I had my 3 kids home while I was studying and working. Those first steps are the hardest but also most important.

What do you love most about being part of the Sussex County community?

I really just love the people! Everyone I have interacted with is genuine and friendly.

Is there another local woman-owned business or inspiring woman you'd like to shout out?

I don't know many here but I would love to hear from some!

If you had one piece of advice for other moms thinking about starting something new, what would it be?

There is a difference between not enjoying something and going through a challenging time, so discerning the two is very important. Stick through the challenging times and it's okay to stop if you aren't enjoying what you are doing.
