Rainy Day Activities

What to do with your toddler when it's raining outside

By Thyra Kelly March 5, 2026

When the rain is coming down too hard and keeps you stuck inside for days on end in early spring, entertaining a toddler can feel like a marathon. Luckily, these rainy days can turn into some of the most fun bonding time with your little one. Whether you want something creative, active, or calming, these simple rainy-day ideas can help keep toddlers busy (and happy!) at home. Try some of these ideas to have a fun time.

1. Build the Ultimate Living Room Fort

Grab blankets, couch cushions, and chairs to create a cozy fort. Toddlers love crawling in and out of small spaces, and it quickly becomes a magical place for stories, snacks, or quiet play.

2. Indoor Obstacle Course

Turn your living room into a toddler adventure zone.
Use pillows to jump over, painter’s tape lines to balance on, and a tunnel made from chairs and blankets to crawl through. This is perfect for burning off some of that toddler energy.

3. Rainy Day Sensory Bin

Fill a shallow bin with items like:

  • Dry rice or pasta
  • Plastic animals
  • Scoops and cups
  • Measuring spoons

Toddlers can scoop, pour, and explore while building important fine motor skills.

4. Dance Party

Get out of your couch potato mode, stop worrying about the kitchen for a moment, and turn on some music and let your toddler move! Dancing helps toddlers release energy and can improve coordination, and it's exactly what everyone needs on a gloomy day for a dopamine boost. Bonus: parents get a little workout too.

5. Simple Craft Time

You don't need anything fancy. Try:

  • Sticker collages
  • Coloring with crayons
  • Finger painting
  • Paper plate animals

Toddlers love creating, even if the result is a colorful mess.

6. Kitchen Helper Time

Toddlers love feeling helpful. Let them:

  • Stir ingredients
  • Wash vegetables
  • Pour pre-measured ingredients

Cooking together builds confidence and introduces early life skills.

7. Storytime Picnic

Lay a blanket on the floor, bring some snacks, and read a few favorite books together. It’s a simple way to make reading feel special.

8. Window Rain Watch

Sometimes toddlers are fascinated by the rain itself. Sit by a window and talk about what you see—raindrops, puddles, birds, or passing cars.
